About Us
We are a social and recreational activity group with a common interest in kayaking. Meetings include various speakers, events and educational programs for novice as well as experienced kayakers. The Kayak Club is open to Hilton Head Plantation owner/residents and their families.
Meetings
Typically, our monthly meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of each month (January through October), at the Plantation House. Meetings are open to our members and their guests, and those interested in becoming members. If the time or location change, the information will be made available on the website.
All Paddlers Welcome!
We offer experiences for all levels. Our water outings carry us to places as close as our own backyard marshes and creeks or to slightly more distant waterways within a couple of hours drive. Occasionally, we schedule longer, multi-day, trips to more distant locations. In the past, we have taken kayak trips to explore the rivers of north-central Florida and even the coastline of Maine.
Equipment
Kayaking equipment is not provided by the club, but may be rented from various outfitters. For more information, please check out the "Boating Outfitters" section of our Resources & Info page.
Membership
To join the Kayak Club of HHP, either email your request to us at [email protected], complete this form, or join us at our next meeting to introduce yourself and meet some of the current members. There are NO membership dues - you just need to be a resident of Hilton Head Plantation. Even if you are not a member, you may be allowed to join us on one of our paddling trips, assuming space is available.

Current Responsibilities:*
HHP Kayak Club Co-Leaders: Janis Agnew & Ellen Kilberg
Communication Coordinator: Open
Outside Speaker Coordinator: Open
Website Coordinator: Marc Agnew
The HHP Kayak Club is a volunteer-run organization and the leaders are there to organize/run meetings, monitor the Kayak Club email, communicate our activities to the Plantation Living newsletter, maintain the club website, and attempt to recruit volunteers to organize paddles. The leaders' responsibilities do not include organizing every paddle, unless they choose to do so. It is often difficult to get people to volunteer to organize paddles because they believe they need to be expert paddlers. In reality, they have the presence of many experienced paddlers to help answer any questions about tides, weather. and paddling locations.
Organizing a paddle can be as simple as contacting an outfitter and scheduling them to lead the paddle.
If you choose to lead the paddle yourself, it will require you to:
* Responsibilities change every few years, and it is important for the continuation of the HHP Kayak Club that volunteers step up to fill the roles that are being vacated.

If you choose to lead the paddle yourself, it will require you to:
- pick a paddle location (it helps if you have paddled there before)
- decide on a maximum number of people you would like to have on the paddle
- communicate details of or changes to the paddle to each "registered" paddler
- fill out a "float plan" (available on the Kayaking & Safety section of the Resources & Info page of this website)
- be able to count the number of people who launch and return (it helps if the number is the same)
- contact your Float Plan Shore Contact to inform them when you launch, letting them know if anyone on their copy of the float plan did not launch
- contact your Float Plan Shore Contact again once everyone has returned to the launch site.
